Giving

Perspective on Giving

2 Corinthians 9 contains some key principles for joyfully giving from what the Lord has graciously given you:

6 Now this, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.

By the word “purposed” in that passage, we get a hint we are
supposed to plan our giving. We should also make arrangements to give
what we have planned to give, so we don’t spend it (see 1
Corinthians 16:1-2 for that principle). What you have planned to give
should be given or at least set aside first, before any spending is done
(see the next paragraph).

In the Old Testament Law, God required His people to give the first
10% of everything they produced (income), primarily to take care of the
those who lead them spiritually (Numbers 18:21, Deuteronomy 26:2). We
don’t believe Christians have a 10% requirement. But the principle of
supporting those who lead you spiritually is clearly reiterated in the
New Testament (1 Corinthians 9:14, 1 Timothy 5:18).

So whatever God leads you to give and you purpose to give with
joy, we want to give you tools to help you make arrangements for your
giving.
